Summary of the event-

Department of Biosciences, IMS Ghaziabad (University Courses Campus) organized two days visit to IIT Roorkee, Department of Biotechnology from 13th December -14th December, 2024 for M.Sc. Biotechnology second year 2023-25 batch along with the Head of department Dr. Surabhi Johari and Dr. Swati Tyagi, Associate Professor. This visit is planned to provide a platform for the students to learn and discuss in the emerging field of biotechnology and their role in industry.

This visit covered a wide range of topics that highlighted how latest advances of biotechnology  are going to used and play an important role to develop an effective drug and to identify the impact of drug specially for antibacterial resistance.

Day-1, start with the talk of Prof. (Dr.) Saugata Hazra Professor at IIT Roorkee, early morning at 10:00 am and followed session by Dr. Indrani Sarkar. Students were delivered with the basics of whole genome sequencing, what is genome, how bacterial samples are collected in the hospital, how they are processed for antibacterial Susceptibility, how the samples are selected for genome analysis, how genome sequencing is done, how the sequencing data is processed and briefing of how the gene is further processed through modelling, docking and simulation, along with that how Genomics is utilized for project ICABR (India Combating Against Bacterial Resistance).

After lunch students were gathered for the talk about polymers, biodegradable polymers, application, demonstration of hydrogel synthesis, crosslinking of polymer, nanofiber fabrication. These sessions were given by the Research Scholar Ms. Komal and Mr. Niteesh.

After that the students were divided in two groups and they explored various instruments and their technology, principle and working such as SEM, TEM, MALDI, EPR, XPS, XRD, AES, ICP-MS, MPAESFPLC, CRYSTALLIZATION ROBOT, MICROSCOPE, BIOREACTORS, DSC, SPR and many more.

Day-2 start with the lecture of Ms. Adwita and Ms. Riya and they explained about the gene function, protein sequence analysis, modeling, docking and MD Simulation.

The post lunch session was started by dividing the students in the group where Mr. Tanmoy, Mr. Sourav, Mr. Abiral, Ms. Jyoti and Ms. Subecca. They all delivered about the cloning strategy, overexpression, protein purification, characterization and demonstration along with the hands on practicals.

Event was concluded by a formal vote of thanks of Dr. Surabhi Johari, Head, Department of Biosciences. Our gratitude goes to Management council of our Institute and Director, (Prof.) Dr. Arun Kumar Singh for his invaluable support in conducting and organizing this educational trip.

Learning Outcome:

  1. To provide the platform to identify and access resources in the field of biotechnology.

  2. To discuss how to implement the techniques in the field of biotechnology and their role in industry application for the student-centered learning higher education.
