"You can be a victim of cancer, or a survivor of cancer. It's a mindset."
~Dave Pelzer
Cancers of the breast and cervix kill more women than any other forms of cancer in all parts of the developing world. The causes of breast and cervical cancer are related, at least in part, to a woman’s sexual and reproductive choices and other exposures in early life – i.e. history of infection with the human papillomavirus, age at first pregnancy and number of pregnancies, breastfeeding history, diet and physical activity. Awareness of cancer risk factors is an essential first step to safeguard our future, and with this thought in mind, members of Student Social Responsibility club organised cancer and reproductive health awareness session for female students. The resource person for the session was Dr. Madhu Gupta, Sr. Consultant Gynaecologist & Obstetrician, Director Navjeevan Nursing Home and Chief Trustee, Beautiful Tomorrow Trust.
She discussed how Breast and Cervical Cancer is rapidly rising amongst women in urban areas and it is the most common cancer in India. Early detection is essential in its management and treatment. Due to ignorance, fear, and social stigma many women present with stage III or IV cancer which requires surgery and extensive treatment. If detected early, then in most cases there will be less aggressive treatment and better chances of recovery.
Cervical Cancer is the second most common cancer among women in India. It is the only preventable cancer and it can be detected in the pre - cancerous phase and cured.
She rolled out statistics to prove the alarming increase cancer cases in recent years. Dr. Madhu advised the girl students & women employees on the measures to be taken to protect themselves from the dreadful disease. suggested precautionary measures like avoiding cholesterol rich fat diet, alcohol intake, reducing obesity based on the BMI standard, curtailing use of tobacco, being aware on aspects like endocrine disruption due to oral contraceptive use, physical inactivity, proper clothing, benefits of breast feeding etc.
The primary goal of session was to promote and develop awareness in the students and emphasize the importance of early detection, all of which play a major role in the treatment of cancer. Cancer awareness can also lead to people making healthier lifestyle choices.
Leading an active life, combined with healthy food habits is essential to good health.
